Getting Started

If you’re not sure what questions to ask, start by examining your own life and thinking about the things you do and enjoy. Here are some prompts to help you find similarities and differences between your experiences and those of people in France:

School Life: Consider your school life in Japan. Many students wear school uniforms, participate in club activities, go on scheduled school trips to important heritage sites, and enjoy healthy school lunches. You can ask the French students about their school experiences. Do they wear uniforms? What kinds of extracurricular activities are popular? How are their school trips organized, and what kind of food do they eat at school?

Daily Routines: Think about your daily routine. What time do you wake up, and what are your daily responsibilities? Do you have any specific traditions or habits? Ask the French students about their daily routines. How do they start their day? What are some common activities they do after school or work?

Hobbies and Leisure: Reflect on your hobbies and how you spend your free time. Do you play any sports, play musical instruments, or participate in any clubs? Find out what hobbies and leisure activities are popular in France. What do people do for fun with their co-workers and friends after work or during the holidays?

Cultural Traditions: Think about the cultural traditions you celebrate with your family. What holidays are important to you, and how do you celebrate them? Ask the French students about their cultural traditions. What holidays do they celebrate, and what are some unique customs they follow?

Food and Dining: Consider your meals and dining habits. What do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Do you have any special foods or dishes that are important to your culture? Ask the French students about their favorite foods and dining habits. Is it true that they often have wine and cheese with dinner? What are some traditional French dishes?

By starting with these questions, you can learn more about the similarities and differences between life in Japan and France, making your conversations with the French students more interesting and meaningful. We look forward to seeing you next week and hope you have plenty of questions for our French visitors!
